Structural damage anything affecting your home's foundation, roof, load-bearing walls, or other core components can be covered by homeowners insurance, but only under specific conditions. The short answer: standard policies cover structural damage from sudden, accidental events, and exclude damage from gradual wear, deterioration, or lack of maintenance. Here's exactly where that line falls.
Insurance adjusters evaluate structural claims against one central question: was the damage sudden and caused by an external event, or did it develop gradually over time? That distinction determines coverage more than almost anything else
Foundation Issues: Standard homeowners insurance excludes foundation damage from normal earth movement, soil contraction, or hydrostatic pressure. Your foundation is covered when the damage results from an explicitly covered peril, for example, an explosion cracking a concrete slab, or a windstorm uprooting a tree that tears up the foundation with it.
Roof Damage: If a storm rips off shingles or a falling limb damages your rafters, dwelling coverage typically pays for structural repairs. If a roof fails because it's decades old and the underlying materials have rotted from age, that's treated as a maintenance issue and is typically not covered.
Wall and Support Beam Damage: A fire or severe storm that damages a load-bearing wall or beam is typically covered. Deterioration from long-term hidden humidity or original construction defects generally isn't.
Water Damage: A pipe that suddenly bursts and damages your framing is typically covered. A slow, hidden leak that rots out wood studs over months is typically excluded from a standard policy, unless you've added a specific hidden water damage endorsement.
Termite and Pest Damage: Damage from termites, carpenter ants, and similar pests is generally not covered; insurers treat pest prevention and treatment as routine home maintenance, not an insurable event

Standard policies leave real gaps for homeowners in higher-risk areas:
Structural exclusions vary by carrier and policy, and gaps like foundation movement, hidden water damage, and sewer backup are worth checking before you need them. IZC can review your current policy and flag any structural coverage gaps.
